Interbike is always a fun event full of wild, wacky, and sometimes surprising products, and this year was no exception. One booth that stood out was the OutBraker booth from a Korean aftermarket company.

What is the OutBraker System?

The OutBraker system is a hydraulic pressure regulator designed to limit the maximum power of both front and rear brakes. With an add-on installed in the hydraulic line, the rider can set the desired maximum hydraulic pressure delivered from the brake lever. No matter how hard the rider squeezes the brake lever, the system ensures the pressure sent to the caliper stays within the preset limit. This setting is adjustable, so riders can change it based on trail conditions or their experience level.

The goal is to prevent riders from going over the handlebars when using the front brake or skidding when using the rear brake.

How Does It Work?

Adjusting the maximum brake power is simple and done using a proprietary wrench. And the OutBraker system has been tested, and pressure gauges show that it works as intended. The light, $150 device allows the rider to set the maximum braking force for each brake. For $300, riders don’t have to master brake modulation skills.

We asked the crew at OutBraker why they created this device. They explained that beginners have difficulty modulating brakes and they have a tendency to go over the bars or skid.

Does It Solve the Problem?

While the OutBraker does what it’s designed to do, there are concerns. Braking is a learned skill—if a rider grabs too much brake and goes over the bars, they’ll learn to modulate the brake next time. So it’s similar to touching fire and getting burned. The person will avoid doing it again.

More importantly, maximum braking power depends on traction and body position. The better the traction, the more braking power a rider can use. Preventing an endo or skid involves more than just limiting brake power; body position and learning brake modulation are key.

Is Limiting Brake Power the Solution?

If a rider desires less braking power, opting for smaller rotors and more affordable brakes might be a better choice. Limiting the power of an otherwise excellent brake isn’t the solution. In fact, it can be dangerous because the OutBraker doesn’t limit the braking power proportionally. When a rider needs more power, such as in a dangerous descent or wet conditions, no additional braking force will be available.
